Color the Decade for Friday Mashup

This week at The Friday Mashup Tara is our hostess and she has a fun challenge for us....create a project based on a decade and also use color blocking.

I had to sit and think about the decade portion a bit. I was a child of the 80's, all the big hair and neon colors but I didn't want to go that route. I happened to be reading a book about WWII and some naval battles and I started thinking about the war period and how US women took on pivotal roles in the work force while men were at war across the globe. Of course the most famous image from that period is Rosie the Riveter,  and so that's what I decided to go with for my card.

For my color blocking I used Night of Navy and Hello Honey to mimic the colors that can be found in the Rosie the Riveter flyers. I paper pierced around the edges of each block and then adhered them to a Whisper White card base. I took a Rosie image from the net and printed it out on Whisper White cardstock and then popped that up with dimensionals across the blocks of color. To finish the card I off I stamped a sentiment from the retired hostess set Perfect Words, punched it out and adhered it at the top of the card.

Square Colors for Friday Mashup

This week at The Friday Mashup Tara is our hostess and she wants us to use the colors Gray, Pink and Sky plus make a square card.

I decided to use the set You've Got This. I stamped the flowers in Versamark on Pink Pirouette card stock and them embossed the flowers in white. I then fussy cut the flowers out of the card stock. The top flower is popped up with dimensionals above the other two. The background behind the flowers was stamped in Soft Sky and the sentiment was stamped in Smoky Slate. The card base is Smoky Slate with a layer of Soft Sky beneath the Whisper White image panel.

Sympathy Silhouette for Friday Mashup

This week at The Friday Mashup Tara is our hostess and she wants us to create an ombre look, and also use an embellishment cluster. I've never tried the whole ombre thing so this was my first time, be gentle with me :)

My husband grew up in the Bay Area of CA and has a close knit circle of friends from his junior high and high school days. They all live in different parts of the US now but Facebook keeps them connected and hubby found out that 3 brothers in his circle lost their dad to a heart attack the other day. Hubby has always told me how nice this dad was and hearing about his passing really got to hubby. He asked me if I could make a sympathy card to send to the mom and of course I said yes.

For the ombre look I sponged 3 colors...Tangerine Tango, Pumpkin Pie and Calypso Coral. After I got the shades I wanted with the sponging I then took an image from the Serene Silhouettes set and stamped that over the colors with Memento Tuxedo Black. I didn't want to overdo the embellishments since it's a sympathy card so I added 3 sequins.

For some reason I ordered 2 packs of Calypso Coral when I didn't even need more of that color so I decided to use that as my card base. I then took a panel of Whisper White and embossed that with the Fancy Fan TIEF. The image panel was then popped up with dimensionals on the WW panel. The sentiment is from Teeny Tiny Wishes and I stamped that in black ink on WW and made a small banner.

Brayers and Circles for Friday Mashup

This week at The Friday Mashup Tara is our hostess and she has a great sketch for us, plus she'd also like us to try the Bouncing Brayer Technique. I do not own a brayer (it's true, I have never bought one!) so I didn't mash it up this time, sorry Tara!

For the sketch I used the set Starburst Sayings, as I thought that would be perfect for the circles. As you can see I had to adjust the sketch a bit to fit the sizes I used but you can still see the sketch on my card. I chose to use nice bright colors as I think they are perfect for the "oh happy day" sentiment!

Antique Embossed for Friday Mashup

This week at The Friday Mashup Tara is bringing us the challenge and I won't lie, this was a tough one for me. She wants use to create a project with an antique style, element or theme. She would also like us to try the Embossed Embossing technique, you can see the tutorial for that HERE.

When I think antique muted comes to mind, along with yellows and browns. It's hard though because antique can be defined in so many different ways and my brain just kind of shuts down when asked to create something in this style. I pulled out the Apothecary Art set though and sat down to try and figure something out!

I stamped the image in Memento Tuxedo Black on watercolor paper and then used aquapainters to color in the image. I used Pear Pizzazz, Daffodil Delight and Crushed Curry with a light background wash of Crumb Cake. It was adhered to a panel of Very Vanilla that was embossed with the Fancy Fan TIEF and embossed with opalescent embossing powder. This gave the embossed sections a darker hue of yellow with some shine to it. It was hard to capture in the photos but in person it looks terrific! To finish it off I colored some pearls with the 'light' Crumb Cake Blendability marker.

For Baby at Friday Mashup

Happy Friday to everyone! We are FINALLY getting some snow here in southcentral Alaska which puts me in a very good mood, I love it! I hope you are enjoying your weather, wherever you may be.

Another thing that puts me in a good mood....Friday Mashup challenges and yes, it's time for another one :) This week Tara is our hostess and she wants us to use the colors Chocolate Chip, Coastal Cabana and Tangerine Tango, plus she'd like to see a project for baby.

I used the Something for Baby set. I had got it on a preorder when it first came out and I've never used it today. Am I the only one who does stuff like that? I also have to admit that I didn't look closely at the colors and so I used Soft Suede, Coastal Cabana and Calypso Coral. To finish my card off I used In Color Sequins. Can I say how much I dislike trying to place sequins? Thank goodness for stamping friends who are available to talk you off the crafting ledge ;)

I used the sketch from Freshly Made Sketches as my jumping off point, isnt it a great sketch? I think I need to create some more cards this weekend using it!

Lovely as a Tree Sketch

Happy Friday! This week at The Friday Mashup Tara is hostess and she has a great sketch for us, plus she wants us to use something on our card that one wouldn't expect to see.

If you look at my card you'll notice I didn't add anything. I sat and thought and tried to figure out what I could use on my card and I drew a total blank. Looking at? The creativity just wasnt there for me :(

I used a tree from the Lovely as a Tree set for my card. I used a stamp from Kinda Eclectic down the left hand side, stamping it in Versamark. The sentiment is from the retired set Full of Blessings.

The edges of the panels and of the card are all sponged with Crumb Cake.

Vellum Stitches for Friday Mashup

I'm late with my post for Friday Mashup, bad me! It was a very hectic week and I had no time to stamp and I'm also not one of those wonderful stampers who manages to work ahead so here I am on Saturday with my card :)

Tara has a fantastic challenge for us.....use stitching/faux stitching on your card along with vellum. I love faux stitching so I was really excited to do this.

I grabbed one of the new sets from the Christmas catalog, White Christmas, and I embossed the trees with white embossing powder(SU, which I found in my stash a few days after posting on here that I had none, sigh). I then took vellum and cut it along the lines of the hill on the stamp to create my snowy hillside (for the bottom hill I did the same thing, just reversed the strip to get the hill going in the other direction). The snowman was stamped in Memento Ink and I colored him in with a white gel pen and some metallic green and red pens I have. I used the snowflakes from the set and stamped them in Whisper White and then covered some of them with Dazzling Details to get a little sparkle. The bird in the tree was stamped in Real Red and the sentiment was stamped in Marina Mist.

Now, I was going to do faux stitching. I love the look and besides, I hate actual sewing. I avoid it all costs. When I was in the Navy I paid someone to do any sewing I needed, big or small and throughout the years at home hubby has done any sewing that's been needed. So yeah, I don't like to sew. For some crazy reason I grabbed a needle and hand stitched the borders on the card! I don't know what got into me, maybe the rain we had all week made me a little more loopy than normal, I don't know. I can say that while I like how it all came out, I wont be reproducing this card, at least not with hand stitching :)

World Map for Friday Mashup

Thank goodness for Friday's! I started back to work this week after having most of the summer off(I work for the school district) and I am wiped out! I'll be able to relax on Saturday, we're taking 3 of the 4 kids to the big air show at the base in Anchorage. Its held every 2 yrs and we go to each one, its the highlight of the summer for us!

What's another great way to relax? Why, playing along with us at The Friday Mashup of course :) This week Tara is our hostess and she has a great sketch, plus a technique to try....the Deft Tile Technique. If you are like me and aren't familiar with this technique you can go HERE to see a tutorial.

I originally pulled out Pleasant Poppies to try the technique with and let me just say that was a big fat fail! The lines from the stamp kept going where they shouldn't have, I had a horrible time trying to sponge around the tiles and finally I just threw that piece away and started brand new with World Map.

Now, this card is pretty darn similar to the card I made for The Friday Mashup last week LOL. What can I say, I really like using this stamp with certain colors. Here I used Baked Brown Sugar, Island Indigo and Pear Pizzazz. I again had some issues with sponging around the tiles but just went with it and in person it looks pretty good. I turned the sketch and used a stamp from Starburst Sayings for my sentiment , which is popped up above a  strip of Pear Pizzazz  going across the card along with the Baked Brown Sugar ribbon.

Moving with Friday Mashup

It's time for another Friday Mashup and this week Tara has a fun challenge for us! She wants to see a project with stripes on it, plus include a removable/movable element.

I was a bit stumped on the movable part. I was going to do a bookmark and thought, naw, get a little more out of your comfort zone. So then I thought about a slider card....naw, too much work involved LOL. After perusing the net I finally decided on a mini blinds card!

I didn't have any rectangle dies so cutting out the middle part was the toughest part. I used the Grand Madison Window die to decorate around the hole and for the image inside I stamped an image from For The Birds. I forgot to take a picture but the sentiment inside the card reads "you make me happy" from the Happy Watercolor set. Most of the mini blinds cards I found didn't open like a traditional card but I wanted to keep mine like that, with a sentiment inside.

Scattered Spring for Friday Mashup

Thank goodness it's Friday! It's been a busy and long week here and I am ready to unwind for the weekend!

Need some help unwinding? Tara is our hostess this week at The Friday Mashup and she has a great challenge for us. She wants to see projects with a spring theme, and she'd also like us to try the scattered embossing technique.

I decided to use this great stamp, Vivid Vases. I just love everything about this stamp! The colors are pulled from the Gingham Garden DSP.

For the embossing I took the Square Lattice EF and put my card base in there. I then used the stylus from the scoring board to highlight the spots where I wanted embossing on my card. In the video that Tara provided the gal uses vellum for the technique but I wasn't keen on that, so hopefully I got the technique right by doing it the way I did. Either way its something I haven't tried before, so I can knock it off the list!

Banners for Friday Mashup

It's time for another Friday Mashup! Tara is bringing us the challenge this week and she has a color challenge for us, plus she wants to see some 3D paper piecing.

The colors are Primrose Petals, Cherry Cobbler, Marina Mist and Soft Sky. I grabbed the SAB set Banner Blast and stamped the banners in every color but Soft Sky because, well, I forgot all about Soft Sky! I ended up stamping a sentiment and hearts inside the card with Soft Sky to get that color in (and I forgot to get a picture of it but I promise you, I did do it!).

I will be completely honest and admit that I did not do the 3D paper piecing part of the challenge. I had originally grabbed the stamp People Like You and attempted it with the flowers and it was miserable for me. I ended up throwing it all away and just did the color portion of the mashup. Sorry Tara!

Ripped Paper and Fussy Cuts for Friday Mashup

Hello and happy first Friday of October! Can you believe it's October already? October is a mixed bag for me, lots of sadness associated with this month but also a lot of fun things to look forward too...like Friday Mashup challenges!This week our challenge is brought to us by Tara and she wants to see ripped paper and fussy cut images on our projects. Now, I fussy cut quite often so you'd think this would have been an easy challenge for me but nope, it had me stumped. Maybe it was the ripped paper portion, I don't know, but I came down to the wire on getting this card done LOL

I ended up creating a Christmas card using the set Remembering Christmas from the holiday catalog. This deer image will also be great for making masculine cards throughout the year! Anyway, I stamped it in Early Espresso and then cut it out. I mounted it with dimensionals on some ovals I cut out using Nestabilities dies. The paper is from the retired DSP Candlelight Christmas. I thought it looked like pretty wallpaper...perfect for hanging a deer against ;)

I stamped the sentiment below the ripped DSP in Early Espresso and added some Very Vanilla candy dots in the upper corners as I thought it looked a little plain.

Tags and Colors for Friday Mashup

I'm late but I made it in with my card for this weeks Friday Mashup challenge!

Tara is our hostess this week and not only does she want us to include a tag on our project, she also wants us to use the following colors: Crisp Cantaloupe, Soft Sky, Primrose Petals and Bermuda Bay.

I'm not a big fan of tags and I don't have any of the tag dies so I chose to make a circle tag. It kind of looks like an ornament but hey, as long as I know its a tag that's all that matters right? LOL

In the recent SU order I got one of the sets I bought was 'For the Birds' and so I broke it out for this card. I kept the card pretty clean and simple, with just a heart in the corner of the tag and paper piercing in the corners. My use of Soft Sky was very subtle....I used it on the mailbox and also lightly sponged the edges of the circle with it.

Bricks and a Sketch for Friday Mashup

** Before I get to the Friday Mashup post I'd just like to say that my heart is with Colorado right now. I spent my teen years growing up in Colorado Springs and for the 2nd time in a year the region is being devastated by a wildfire. The Black Forest Fire, which started on Tuesday, has now become the most destructive fire in Colorado's history. I have friends and family that have been evacuated or are waiting to see if the fire is going to turn in their direction and it's very scary. Todays Friday Mashup challenge is brought to us by Tara. She wants us to give the brick wall technique a try, and to also use the sketch she provided!

I had never done or heard of this technique, so I looked it up on Splitcoaststampers. You can find it HERE. It definitely gives a neat effect but I cant lie, I found the work a bit tedious and since I have some fine motor skill issues, handling the small sections you cut out was a bit of a problem for me. BUT at least I can say I tried the technique and conquered it, so thank you Tara for the challenge!

I used the sketch also and kept it very simple, only adding some Gingham Garden DSP across the bottom and some Daffodil Delight ribbon across the middle. The bright colors are perfect for a summer birthday, so I added a birthday sentiment at the bottom!

Colorful Mail for Friday Mashup

This week at The Friday Mashup Tara has a color challenge for us.....she wants us to use Sahara Sand, Perfect Plum and Wisteria Wonder.

I won't lie...I hate the color purple, any shade of it, so as soon as I saw 2 of the 3 colors we were to use I cringed and had no clue how I was going to pull all of this together. Well, when in doubt keep it simple and that's what I did here! I spritzed some Sahara Sand on a piece of Sahara Sand cardstock that I had embossed and then I pulled out the Oh, Hello set from the spring mini. I stamped the oval in Wisteria Wonder and popped it up with dimensionals over a banner of Perfect Plum DSP that I put down. I stamped the sentiment in Perfect Plum and that is also popped up with dimensionals(even though you cant tell in the pics, the extra dimension looks really nice). My daughter insisted the card needed some bling so I added the 3 rhinestones at the bottom to finish things off.

Like I said, nice and simple and I used all the colors! I'll be mashing this up by sending this card to a good friend of mine :)

Markers and Texture

Todays Friday Mashup is brought to us by Tara and she wants us to break out our markers and add some texture to our cards while we're at it!

I love my markers, I think I use them more than anything else. My friends that have been stamping with me for a while love to laugh at me because I LOVE detailed stamps that require coloring, especially Christmas ones. It's usually not a "Lisa card" unless its got coloring and I did color the stamped image for todays card, but its not a detailed image. I used the adorable whale from the 'Oh, Whale' set from the spring mini and I even broke out a color I honestly cant stand...Summer Starfruit! I wanted some contrast between the Pool Party and Island Indigo and thought the Starfruit was a good color for that.

My texture is a bit more subtle....I used the Cloudy Day embossing folder(also in the Spring mini) for the sky. Such a cute embossing folder, I am definitely going to have to break it out more often.

My sketch is from this weeks Freshly Made Sketches. I havent been able to play along with them for a few weeks so I was glad to be able to join in again!

Faux Washi Sketch for Friday Mashup

Hello and happy Friday to everyone! This will be my first full day as a 39 year old....yep, my birthday was 10-11-12. How cool is that date? LOL And to top the night off I got to transition from Thurs night into the wee hrs of Fri morning watching the Northern Lights dance in the sky above my house, gotta love that!

Tara is bringing us a technique and a sketch this week for the Friday Mashup. She wants us to try making faux washi tape. Now I cannot lie, she posted this and I had to ask what the heck washi tape was, as apparently I am living under a rock here and had no clue. The DT filled me in and I went "um, hmm, ok then", LOL. I don't think its something I would buy and this technique is a perfect way to get the look without hoarding...I mean adding ;)....to your stash. You can find her tutorial for it HERE.

Now as I did the technique I learned by the time I got to my second strip that making sure the paper is completely saturated is the key. Apparently my first strip wasn't quite wet enough and it took me forever to get all the white off the back. With my second strip I added more water and the process went much quicker. Like Tara I also used matte tape, as that's just what I happened to have on hand :)

If you don't want to try the faux washi tape that's ok, Tara has a great sketch and you can do that instead or you can go for the gusto and mash it all up :)

A Birdy Birthday for Sunday Stamps

It's time for Sunday Stamps and ((gasp)) ys, I have my act together and am able to get my card in this week! Getting my schedule switched back to nights from days took me a bit longer than I thought but I am good to go and ready to be a good DT member :)

This week Tara has a color challenge for us, using the colors Sahara Sand, Lucky Limeade and Wisteria Wonder.

I cant lie...I am not a fan of the color purple at all, so fitting Wisteria Wonder in was a bit of a struggle for me. I finally decided to use it as an accent and I think I managed to make myself happy with this minimal use of the color :)

I didnt get the card done in time to link up but I did want to acknowledge that I used the sketch from last weeks Retro Sketch challenge!

Pretty Colors and Paper Piecing for Friday Mashup

Howdy howdy :) Time for another Friday Mashup and this week our challenge is from Tara and its her first challenge with us as a new design team member! Make sure you head over to the Friday Mashup blog to play along and welcome Tara to the team!

For her challenge Tara wants us to use the color combo of Pool Party, Daffodil Delight and Rich Razzleberry or do paper piecing on your project OR mash it up and use the color combo plus paper piecing! Remember, its paper PIECING, not piercing. This is where you cut out your images for a 2nd time on DSP, and adhere it to your main image. On my project the Rich Razzleberry polka dot DSP is what I paper pieced to create the dresses on the little girls. (and yes, my picture sucks...its been raining here all week, which is good, but leaves me little light inside or outside to take good pics, so sorry for the quality!)

1. Make a project using the " Paper Piecing " technique.
2. Or Make a project using " Rich Razzleberry, Daffodil Delight & Pool Party ".
3. Or "Mash it Up" and create a " Paper Piecing Project using the above colors."
